Web lectures Art and Spirituality of the Russian Orthodox Tradition
On the occasion of the exhibition Splendour and Glory: Art of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Amsterdam Centre for Eastern Orthodox Theology (ACEOT) and Hermitage Amsterdam organized a special lecture series entitled Art and Spirituality of the Russian Orthodox Tradition. These lectures have been filmed and can be watched for free as 'web lectures'.
The lecture series provides background information on the living Russian Orthodox tradition form which for the art objects on display stem. The speakers are all Orthodox academics and associated with ACEOT, a recently established academic centre at VU University Amsterdam. In the lectures the worlds of art, religion and scholarship meet. These are the four pairs of lectures:
- Revd. Dr. Michael Bakker (director of ACEOT) and Revd. Prof. Andrew Louth (professor of Orthodox Theology at VU University): general introduction and introduction to Russian Orthodox tradition;
- Revd. Prof. Andrew Louth and Aidan Hart, BA (iconographer and sculptor): images and icons;
- Revd. Prof. Andrew Louth and Revd. Dr. Ivan Moody (composer and musicologist): liturgy and music;
- Revd. Dr. Cyril Hovorun (theologian and priest monk) and Revd. Prof. Andrew Louth: monasticism and spirituality.
You can watch the lectures in two formats:
- 1. As double screen web lectures (on the website of VU University Amsterdam)
- 2. As single screen web lectures in Apple's iTunes U (on-line or on your iPhone or iPad).
The production of the web lectures was supported financially by the Iona Foundation and the Wilhelmina E. Jansen Foundation.
